The Fireside Skywatch Festival 2024
PRAGSAC in collaboration with the Department of Earth Science University of Ghana and Development in Africa with Radio Astronomy (DARA), presents the Fireside Skywatch Festival 2024.
Due to the relentless pursuit of modernization and the encroachment of light pollution; families, tribes, and communities who once gathered around firesides in the evening to marvel at the skies and learn from ancient African knowledge no longer do so.
The Promoting Astronomy in Ghana, through school visits and astronomy clubs, (PRAGSAC) in collaboration with the Department of Earth Science University of Ghana and Development in Africa with Radio Astronomy (DARA), presents the Fireside Skywatch Festival 2024.
Due to the relentless pursuit of modernization and the encroachment of light pollution; families, tribes, and communities who once gathered around firesides in the evening to marvel at the skies and learn from ancient African knowledge no longer do so.
The Fireside Sky Watch Fest aims to revive this passion under the AfricaLookUp themed Cascade Outreach Activities around the IAU General Assembly 2024 (IAU-GA2024) funded by the African Astronomical Society (AfAS) Education and Outreach Committee.
The event aimed to bring the public together in Ghana to observe the sky using telescopes, sharing cultural stories, their meanings, and ask the Astronomer and the Earth Scientist session.
While the stone age may have ended and technology has taken over, this event promises to bridge the gap between the ancient, bring back the love for our rich cultural heritage of astronomy and promote astro-tourism by offering the University community and the general public a unique opportunity to observed our beautiful night sky with some interesting astronomical objects like our Moon, its creators, the Planets, Stars and the Galaxies.
The event is scheduled to be held at the Four Court of the Department of Earth Science, University of Ghana GPS Address G4-489-0288, on Friday December 13, 2024, from 17:30 GMT to 20:30 GMT.
Key Activities Include:
•Stargazing: Observations Of celestial objects through optical telescopes
•Storytelling: Highlighting the rich cultural heritage of astronomy in Ghana and from three other African countries; The Botswana, Namibia and Zambia, from students of the University of Ghana and DARA students.
•Engaging Presentations: Bridging ancient and modern perspectives of astronomy through discussions
Q&A sessions: Ask the Astronomer and the Earth Scientist
